Cheap Hotels near The National Library, Madrid

The Biblioteca Nacional was founded in 1712 and is located in the centre of Madrid, near Plaza Colon. This massive library is the largest in Spain, thanks to the mandate obliging printers to submit a copy of every book printed in Spain to the library. In the 19th century the Biblioteca Nacional significantly increased the number of antique and valuable books in its collection. The library was opened to the public in 1896 and a large reading room was created to hold up to 320 readers.
Today, the library's growing collection consists of more than 26,000,000 items including 15,000,000 books, 30,000 manuscripts, 143,000 periodicals, 4,500,000 graphic materials, 510,000 music scores, 500,000 maps, 600,000 sound recordings, 90,000 audiovisuals, 90,000 electronic documents, to just give an idea. It aims to be an essential point of reference for research into Spanish culture. The library also shares its space with the National Archaeological Museum, which is well worth a visit too.
