What to see
The centre of Madrid fans out from the Puerta del Sol, a large square. It includes the historic heart of the city, which encompasses the medieval streets around the Plaza Mayor, as well as the 'Paseo del Arte', home to the city's trio of world-class museums (the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía), in the east, and the area around the immense Royal Palace in the west. Other central neighbourhoods include Chueca and Malasaña, celebrated for their restaurants and nightlife; swanky Salamanca, with its upscale shops and bars; and the appealing neighbourhoods of La Latina and Lavapiés, which are home to some of the city's best tapas bars.
Local vibe
Each of Madrid's neighbourhoods have a different vibe: hang out in the lively tapas bars near the Plaza Santa Anna; rub shoulders with the rich and famous in upscale Salamanca, or enjoy the fashionable bars and bistros of Chueca.
Practicalities
The historic centre of the city is easy to get around on foot, but Madrid also boasts an excellent metro system, underpinned by a good network of buses.
