The Puerta de Alcalá is an iconic symbol of Madrid, inscribed on the hearts of the Madrileños, immortalized many times on the silver screen and emblazoned on so many tourist trinkets. Inaugurated in 1778, the gate was reconstructed by order of Carlos III and stands at the entrance of the medieval city of Madrid, which was once surrounded by a wall.
This monumental gate is located across the street from the Retiro Park, and a short walk from Plaza Cibeles, the main post office and Banco de España. This is the main of several gateways to the city. It took nine years to create the granite Puerta del Alcalá gate which has five entranceways: three large archways and another two smaller arches. Each passageway is decorated with a lion head sculpted by Roberto Michel. Also, you can still see shrapnel from a cannon ball from a battle in 1823.
