Cheap Hotels near Teatro Real, Madrid
The Madrid Opera House or Teatro Real, as it is called, is Madrid’s main opera house. Located in the centre of Madrid and facing the Royal Palace, it adds an air of elegance to this opulent square. After 32 years of planning and construction the structure was finally finished in 1850. Donizetti’s La Favorite was the first opera to be performed here, with Queen Isabel II gracing the Royal Box.
The theatre took a hiatus from opera and ballet after damage was incurred by the creation of the metro. Incongruously, it hosted the popular Eurovision Song Contest (in 1969) which featured an on-stage sculpture by Salvator Dali. It only reopened in 1997 as a traditional opera house and today you can see all manner of classical music at the opulent Teatro Real. This is the site not to be missed by culture vultures and lovers of classical music.
