Real Jardín Botanico de Madrid, or the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid, is located next to the Prado Museum in the centre of Madrid along the Paseo del Prado. King Ferdinand VI had the garden built in 1755 and it was originally located near the Manzanares River. Its 2000 plants were purchased twenty years later by Carlos III, with the intention of teaching botany and encouraging studies in this field.
Today's collection includes 30,000 plants and flowers and 1500 trees including ornamental and medicinal plants, an orchard and a rock garden. There are fountains, ponds and a greenhouse which houses tropical plants, bryophytes and also plants from temperate and desert climates. In addition to being educational, the Real Jardín Botanico de Madrid is simply a beautiful garden and a quiet green oasis from the busy capital city. It is open daily at 10:00 except Christmas and January 1st and costs only 2 euros.
