At almost 37,000m2 Madrid’s Plaza España is one of the largest squares in Spain. Strategically positioned in the city’s old quarter, it unites Gran Vía and Calle Princesa, as well as being within walking distance of such major attractions as the Royal Palace and the Debod Temple. Several noteworthy buildings look out over the square including the towering Torre de Madrid, Europe’s tallest building until 1967, the 25-storey Edificio España and the impressive Modernist Casa Gallardo.
Plaza España is used as a venue for events and is a common meeting point for tourists. At its very centre is a large fountain dedicated to Spain’s best known writer, Miguel de Cervantes, and includes a statue to the writer and to four of his best known characters; Dulcinea and Aldonza Lorenzo, Sancho Panza and Don Quixote.
