Cheap Hotels near El Escorial, Madrid

The Escorial is a must for all visitors to Madrid. Fortress-like and austere, this vast grey granite monastery which dates back to 1563 was the residence of Philip II and is the final resting place of many other kings. Designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo, the complex is located in the town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial and houses a monastery, palace, museum and a school. A UNESCO World Heritage site since 1984, it receives around half a million visitors per year, many of whom also come for its world-class art collection which includes works by Velázquez, Titian and El Greco. The Escorial is so huge that it may not be possible to see all of it. Check out the amazing basilica, the Pantheon of Kings (the underground crypt) and leave time to stroll in the landscaped gardens.
