What to see
The Plaza Mayor, a vast, arcaded square flanked by handsome buildings, provides a suitably grand centrepiece for Madrid's historic quarter. First designed in the 16th century by the preeminent Spanish architect of the age, Juan de Herrera, it was rebuilt in the 1790s after being destroyed by fire. It was another outstanding architect, Juan de Villanueva, who gave it its current ravishing yet restrained neoclassical appearance. The square is dominated by the Casa de la Panadería, which now contains the main tourist office, and is brightly painted with frescoes which date from the 1990s.

All the city's main public events were held on the Plaza Mayor, from markets to executions, and from bullfights to autos-da-fé (when judgement was passed on so-called heretics, many of whom ended up being burned publicly).

Practicalities
The Plaza Mayor sits in the very heart of Madrid's historic quarter, and is easy to reach on foot. Although many of the streets in its vicinity have been pedestrianised (as well as the square itself), you can easily reach it by bus or metro (to Puerta del Sol).
