Here was the site of bullfights, a marketplace, hangings and autos de fe (sentencing during the infamous Inquisition), but today has lovely outdoor cafes from which you can drink in the sun and atmosphere. From here head to the extravagant Royal Palace with its 2800 rooms- just 50 of which are mercifully open to the public including the beautiful Royal Pharmacy. Outside the palace at the back of the Opera house is a garden with several statues of Spanish monarchs. They are sketchy in detail, probably because they were originally intended to be placed on the ceiling before someone wisely realised that the structure would cave in. From here, explore the surroundings for great tapas, or head to the Plaza España and catch a movie in original version at the Verdi cinema.
