The clean, friendly, and family-run Hostal Cruz Sol has a fantastic location right in the centre near Puerta del Sol in Madrid. The Plaza Mayor was once the site of bullfights and where inquisition sentences were handed out, but today has many outdoor cafes great for people watching (if a bit on the pricey side). The Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia Museums are walking distance or a short bus or metro ride away. Below Plaza Mayor are the famous cave bars, the fantastic Meson del Champiñones (c Cuchilleros) is one of Madrid’s oldest taverns serving the house specialty, mushrooms.
