The Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor are up the street, and were both constructed by Felipe III, a legacy to the Hapsburg regime. Head out for the compulsory tapas bar run where you can sample jamon de pato (cured duck meat), marinated olives and the occasional jabali (wild boar) and wash it all down with a cool beer or velvety red wine. For a great sit down meal, the nearby Chueca neighbourhood has charming little restaurants. The nightclubs and bars in Chueca tend to be gay oriented, but some allow straights.
