Atocha Station (Estación de Atocha) The Atocha Station or Estacion de Atocha is the main train station of Madrid, located just minutes from the heart of the city, Puerta del Sol. Built originally in 1851, this beautiful station with wrought iron work is the main hub which serves commuter routes locally, and extends to the rest of Spain through normal rail and Spain's high speed trains, the AVE. AVE trains travel hundreds of kilometres in just a two or three hours to go to Barcelona and Sevilla, hassle free. It is a great place from which to take a day trip to Toledo or Aranjuez for example. You can also take buses from this hub. It is just down the street from the Prado Museum and just across the street from the Reina Sofia Contemporary art museum. There is also a metro stop here on line 2, Atocha just a few stops from the Puerta del Sol.
